A Data Storage Converter is a simple online tool that helps you convert between different units of digital information, such as Bytes, Kilobytes (KB), Megabytes (MB), Gigabytes (GB), and Terabytes (TB).
This is a common source of confusion. A **Kilobyte (KB)** is a decimal unit (base-10), meaning 1 KB = 1000 Bytes. This standard is often used by hard drive manufacturers. A **Kibibyte (KiB)** is a binary unit (base-2), meaning 1 KiB = 1024 Bytes. This is what operating systems (like Windows) traditionally use to measure memory and file size, which is why a 1TB hard drive appears as ~931GB in Windows. Our tool includes both to avoid confusion.
Using the standard decimal (base-10) system, there are exactly **1,000 Megabytes (MB)** in one Gigabyte (GB). Conversely, in the binary (base-2) system, there are **1,024 Mebibytes (MiB)** in one Gibibyte (GiB). Both units are available in our converter.
This is due to the KB vs. KiB difference. The hard drive manufacturer sells you 500 *decimal* Gigabytes (500,000,000,000 Bytes). However, your operating system often measures in *binary* Gibibytes (GiB, where 1 GiB = 1024x1024x1024 Bytes). When you divide 500,000,000,000 Bytes by 1,073,741,824 (the number of bytes in one GiB), you get approximately 465.66 GiB, which is what your computer reports.
